After a long search I bought this one..
I looked at this camera the Panasonic hvx200, the sonys, the jvc 200, and even Canon's bigger brother the X1. I found this one to have fantastic reviews on DVinfo.net, a great video forum. My concerns about 24f vs 24p were addressed to my satisfaction- there really isn't a difference. I like tape vs the HVX's expensive storage solutions. One concern I had was, will it look like a pro camera? That is important in some situations where your equipment gives you added credibilty with clients and talent.As soon as I opened the box I was in love! This is a really substantial camera. Especially with the opt wide angle from Canon and the matte box provided, this does not look like your mama's camcorder.I really like the manual controls, so that you don't have to go thru menus to change parameters. Perfect companion for XL-H1
About 1 year ago I bought an XL-H1 and a Sony HVR-A1U to do work on a documentary. Though the Sony has proved to be a great camera in its own right, it doesn't cut well with the XL-H1, and the image quality in bright light was near as good, in darker settings, things just fell apart. So I bought this camera XH-A1. I thought when I bought the XL-H1 I would end up buying a second when I could afford it, but I found no compelling reason on a couple of counts. (1) Jack pack is wonderful if you are planning to haul around a RAID array and a generator. I'm sure this would be allot of fun for the run a gunner like myself ;-) (sarcasm). Even though I have heard people criticize the HDV format for compression and artifacts not seen as much with the uncompressed format you get from the HD/SDI output.. I personally think maybe its 1 person in a 1000 who could tell the difference in the end (and they might be faking, I can't). This pictures is NOTHING short of Stunning period. (2) I thought...

Good Tutorial
I found this DVD to be very helpful with getting to know the Canon XH A1 Video camera. You don't actually NEED to view the DVD...You could set the camera to "auto" and get nice images. Knowing how to adjust pre sets, and what all the switches and ports are for, is a good thing, and easy as pie to learn by watching this DVD. Elite Video had very prompt shipping and I recieved this DVD in few days. They were also very prompt with replies to my emails asking about this DVD. Highly recommended!!

I only wish i had found this dvd sooner. I must say that it starts out a little slow, but after the first two guys pass it on it gets great. The information that you get from this dvd for the camera is priceless. Douglas puts forward so much professionalism that i needed to pause and take notes. These cameras have so many settings and controls that you should go to school for them. This dvd does that for you in your home. I highly recommend this dvd for amatuers and pros alike.

Canon XH A1 Vasst Training DVD... Novice or Well Informed?
This DVD doesn't rate a five because it is not for the novice. Jargon words were mentioned quickly like I'm supposed to know what they mean, however, if you are into photography, and understand, White Balance, F-Stops, and all the basic stuff they blew by, then this information is for you.It doesn't rate a 3 star because there is sufficent advanced information for me to learn how to use the in depth camera menu information. This is important if you intend to use this camera as a pro. Should you buy it as instead of to the Elite DVD, YES, if you want more indepth advanced information on this Canon XHA1 and XHG1.I will need to view the DVD at least a dozen times to grasp the advanced concepts. This is far better than the manual that came with the video camera.Because I am such a novice, I will also purchase the other Elite DVD, because reviews stated they were to basic, and this may be just what I need.

Fabulous. Wonderful. Great!
I love this camera. If you don't have a lot of experience with prosumer cameras (as in my case), the first look may be a bit intimidating (a friend said, "It looks like you're filming tv news"). Especially as I added a Rode shotgun mike (not sure it does anything other than make the sound louder, but...still checking it out).You can't rest the camera on your shoulder, but the image stabilizer helps and the grip and buttons are all well designed and easy to reach. I struggled through the manual, but fortunately bought Dan Curran's dvd about the xh-a1 which appears to be almost identical. This was a -huge- help. I can't recommend it enough if you are at all unsure of what you're looking at. He goes through the simplest things (putting the shoulder strap on) to some very technical settings that you can do. The dvd saved me -so much- learning time and also prevented some careless mistakes (like letting sunlight through the viewfinder).This camera feels like a...

Everything I hoped it would be.
What can I say except this camera is the only one that offers everything you need in this price range. What really sets it apart is the two xlr inputs on the side allowing two microphones to capture sound, and it switchable between external and internal mics, or use both simultaneously. No other camera offers this. Get a lens filter kit and the wide angle and telephoto adapters and you're ready to create anything you can imagine. I recently filmed a music festival using this camera for long shots, close-ups, cutaways, and static shots, everything looks amazing. A tip for the novice to high-def recording- keeping the lens clean and checking it frequently is a must. The tiniest speck of dust looks huge on playback...

Love It !!! Love IT !!! Love It !!!
This camera is not for the novice by any means because once you step out of the auto everything mode it can be quite complicated.Now that being said if it wasn't for all the manual settings and adjustments I would not want it anyway.I have a Canon XLH1 and this camera makes the perfect workmate for it.The picture quality is virtually the same so for a two camera shoot it's great.Although it's about half of the weight of it's big brother the XLH1 it's still a little hard to hold steady since you can't rest it on your shoulder but the image stabilization is very helpful.Also the auto focus is very fast and really comes in handy when you have to run and gun so to speak.All in all this is a great camera with a awesome picture and I simply love it.

Is this the future? Well I think so. The recording is great - the interfaces are clunky and ugly. They look like dos about 20 years ago and it is still much too expensive but all that will change. i would advise anyone travelling to forget the stock of tape and move to one of these. The files are easy to transfer onto hard drives and so leave you free to film and film.

RTM - This Product is Awesome
I don't know what the 'professional' documentary film maker is taking about. The file format is easily imported into Adobe Premiere. Works like a charm each time. All I can say if you read the manual you will do just fine.This has saved me hundreds of hours of capture time. Camera is Canon XH A1.

FS 4 Pro Firestore is awesome
As a pro TV cameraman working in Africa for the worlds largest broadcaster i have found this kit invaluable. It is easy to use and saves hours of digitizing. I use it with Final Cut pro and have used it with Avid also. The workflow is simple and it allows me to back up everything on tape at the same time. It is also useful if filming in a humid environment and your tape heads stop working and when drunk soldiers demand you hand over your tape as you can do so while knowing you still have the footage. . . Excellent stuff.
